Agathis microstachya is a species of plant fromthe araucaria family (Araucariaceae). It isnative tonortheast Queensland (Australia).

description

Agathis microstachya grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 50 meters and diameters of up to 2.7 meters at chest height . The straight trunk has no thickening at the base and tapers only slightly up to the crown . The coarsely scaled trunk bark is brown to gray-brown. The pink to brown inner bark of the trunk exudes a milky sap and smells faintly of pinene .

The stiff leaves have a fine, almost parallel leaf veining and are linear to elliptical in shape with a length of 2 to 9 centimeters and a width of 0.5 to 2.5 centimeters. They stand on a 1 to 2 millimeter long petiole. The leaves are spirally arranged on the primary branches and opposite to almost opposite on the secondary branches. Seedlings have leaves that are 5 to 8 centimeters long and 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters wide and ovate-lanceolate in shape and have a pointed tip. Otherwise they resemble the leaves of older trees.

Agathis microstachya is monoecious-segregated ( monoecious ). The male cones are on a short stem or are almost sessile, are 1.1 to 1.6 centimeters long and 0.6 to 0.8 centimeters thick. They consist of 400 to 500 cone scales, with each scale carrying two to five microsporophylls with two to five pollen sacs . The spherical to egg-shaped female cones are 7.5 to 11.5 inches long and 6.5 to 10 inches thick at maturity in December. They consist of a total of 160 to 210 cone scales with blue-green tips, with the largest scales between 2.6 and 3.5 centimeters long and 3.3 to 4.5 centimeters wide. The winged seeds are heart-shaped.

Occurrence and endangerment

The natural range of Agathis microstachya only includes the Atherton Tablelands in northeast Queensland and the surrounding mountains. The distribution area is between 17 ° and 18 ° south latitude.

The species grows in rainforests at altitudes of 400 to 1100 meters. The annual precipitation is mm depending on the location 1400-3300, and the temperatures are between 10 ° C and 30 ° C. There Agathis microstachya grows on deep loam and clay soils as well as on soils that have formed on different silicate rocks .

Agathis microstachya is classified as "low risk" in the IUCN Red List . In the past, logging played an important role. The stands fragmented by these felling could be more vulnerable to forest fires. Introduced species could have an impact on the rate of regeneration of the species. The total population of Agathis microstachya is considered stable.

Systematics

Agathis microstachya is assigned to the Agathis section within the genus of the Kauri trees ( Agathis ) .

The first description as Agathis microstachya was in 1916 by John Frederick Bailey and Cyril Tenison White in Contr. Queensland Fl. Bot. Bull. , Volume 18, Page 13.

use

The soft wood is easy to work and polish, but is not very durable when it comes into contact with the ground. The cream-colored to pale brown heartwood usually has inconspicuous annual rings and a density of around 480 kg / m³. It is used in house building and carpentry as well as flooring.
