Margarete Katharina Wiggen (born February 7, 1923 in Marl ; † November 24, 1999 in Bayreuth ) was a German artist who, as a sculptor , created fountains , reliefs and sculptures in bronze , among other things .

Life

Margarete Wiggen was the daughter of the engine driver Karl Adolf (1893–1965) and Anna Kunigunde Adolf, née Fischer (1897–1966). As a child, Margarete Wiggen painted pictures that were exhibited in kindergartens, and as a 13-year-old she designed a series of stage sets for her father's theater group . She completed her studies as a trained religion teacher. After the war she helped set up an aid organization for displaced people and returnees in the Oldenburg area. In Cloppenburg she came into contact with the sculptor Paul Dierkes from the Berlin University of the Arts , who introduced her to bronze as a material. In 1952 she married J. Gerhard Wiggen (1921–2008) in Münster . The marriage had two children. With Professor Nathanson in Paris she acquired further knowledge in drawing and painting. In 1971 she moved from the Düsseldorf area to Köditz . Among other things, she made 700 bronze sculptures, including several works in the city of Hof and the surrounding area . These include a relief and the city coat of arms on the Hofer Rathaus and the town hall fountain and the sculptures Wasserschütterin and Drei Mädchen in Schwarzenbach an der Saale . In addition to reliefs and sculptures, she designed other fountains in Hof, Naila , Bad Steben and Rehau , but also further away, such as in Ochtrup in Westphalia and in Werl . The former Prime Minister of the Free State of Bavaria Alfons Goppel received the bronze relief Mother of Christendom from Margarete Wiggen as a special gift on the occasion of the award of honorary citizenship of the city of Hof on March 13, 1981 . On October 1, 1982, the Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss paid his first official visit to the city of Hof. Lord Mayor Hans Heun gave him the bronze relief sleeping or waking as a gift . Between 1961 and 1993, Margarete Wiggen regularly realized exhibitions in various cities, including several times in the Brinkwirth Gallery in Ochtrup and in Hofer Freiheitshalle . In the years after 1990 she lived in Bayreuth . Margarete Wiggen was a member of the Nordfranken group , the professional association of visual artists and the German Society for Christian Art . For her life's work, Chamber President Christian Heinrich Sandler presented the Upper Franconian Economy Culture Prize in 1993 . Her daughter is the Bayreuth artist Gabriele Plössner, who creates bronze sculptures from the world of Wagner operas.
