Agave gracillima is a species of the agave genus( Agave ) in the subfamily of the agave family (Agavoideae). The specific epithet gracillima is derived from the superlative of the Latin word gracillimus for 'graceful' and refers to the habitus of the species.

description

Agave gracillima grows quite large. The four herbaceous, bent over, linear-lanceolate leaves are very runny and strongly bent back. There are numerous closely spaced leaf veins. The leaf blade is 14 to 49.5 (rarely up to 76) inches long and 2.8 to 3.9 (rarely up to 5) inches wide. The narrow to medium-wide hyaline leaf margins are entire.

The "eared" inflorescence reaches a height of 90 to 120 centimeters. The semi-dense flower-bearing part is 17.5 to 31.5 inches long and has 20 to 25 sessile flowers . The ellipsoidal neck loose ovary is 10 to 14 millimeters long. The tepals are brownish or yellowish green in color. The cylindrical, blunt square flower tube is straight, not clearly constricted above and is angled to the ovary. It has a length of 11 to 15 (rarely from 8) millimeters. The elongated and turned back tips are 12 to 16 millimeters long. The stamens are curved upwards when fully grown. The upwardly curved stylus projects beyond the flower tube to 28 to 36 millimeters. The club-shaped scars are triangular and gently furrowed. The flowering period extends from mid-August to late November.

Nothing is known about the fruits and seeds .

Systematics and distribution

Agave gracillima is common in the states of Durango and Nayarit in valleys, on grassy plains and oak forests in the mountainous region at altitudes of 1100 to 1370 meters.

The first description by Alwin Berger was published in 1915. Synonyms are Manfreda elongata Rose (1903), Polianthes elongata (Rose) Shinners (1966, nom. Inval. ICBN article 53.1), Agave gracilis A. Berger (1915) and Polianthes rosei Shinners (1967, nom. Inval. ICBN article 52.1).

The species belongs to the subgenus Manfreda and is assigned to the Manfreda group there.
