Agave howardii is a species of the agave genus( Agave ) in the subfamily of the agave family (Agavoideae). The specific epithet howardii honors the American botanist Thaddeus Monroe Howard (* 1929).
description
Agave howardii is bare, its roots are fleshy. The five to six upright, spread out, glossy green leaves stand together in a basal rosette made of an onion surrounded by fibers . They are narrow, lanceolate to linear, tapered at their tip or have an attached tip. Their leaf blades are 22 to 27 (rarely up to 36) centimeters long and 15 to 25 (rarely from 10) millimeters wide. The leaf margins are entire. The leaves are occasionally speckled magenta on their underside.
The "eared" inflorescence reaches a height of 60 to 110 centimeters. The flower-bearing part is 20 to 70 centimeters long and bears 13 to 30 centimeters apart standing, single, semi-hanging flowers . Their upright pedicel is 17 to 29 (rarely up to 50) millimeters long. The ovary has a length of 9 to 16 (rarely up to 19) millimeters. The blue tepals are coral red at their base. In the upper third the color changes into green. In addition, the tepals are irregularly dashed yellow on the outside. Inside they are greenish yellow and often have brown stripes on the flower tube. The flower tube is almost straight and forms a slight angle to the ovary. Their mouth is slightly crooked and measures 3 to 5 millimeters in diameter. Their rounded and slightly spread out tips are 1.5 to 3 millimeters long. The stamens do not protrude from the flower tube or the anthers protrude 2 millimeters. The white stylus has three turned back tips. The flowering period extends from July to August.
The spherical fruits have a diameter of 0.8 to 1 centimeter.
Systematics and distribution
Agave howardii is widespread in the Mexican states of Jalisco and Colima on water-permeable soils in partial shade in oak forests or tropical, deciduous forests at altitudes of 1000 to 1100 meters.
The first description as Polianthes howardii by Susan Elizabeth Verhoek-Williams was published in 1976. Joachim Thiede and Urs Eggli placed the species in the genus Agave in 1999 .
The species belongs to the subgenus Manfreda and is assigned to the Polianthes group there.
