Agave longibracteata is a type of plant from the genus Agave ( Agave ) in the subfamily of the Agave family (Agavoideae). The specific epithet longibracteata is derived from the Latin words longus for 'long' and bracteatus for 'having bracts' and refers to long bracts of the species.

description

Agave longibracteata reproduces vegetatively through runners- forming rhizomes . The spherical rhizomes measure 5 centimeters in diameter. Their roots are wiry. The up to 14 upright-spreading, linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, brittle, herbaceous leaves are broadly furrowed and occasionally wavy. Their point is blunt and has a very short point. The bright green leaf blade , rarely spotted magenta on the underside, is 21 to 39 centimeters long and 1.5 to 3.5 (rarely up to 4.3) centimeters wide. The entire leaf margins are slightly bent back. The remnants of the leaf base are coarsely fibrous and up to 6 inches long.

The "ear-like" inflorescence reaches a height of up to 125 centimeters. The open flower-bearing part bears 15 to 21  flowers with large, narrow triangular bracts. The sitting flowers smell of citronella and are directed outwards from their axis. The elongated ovary is 12 to 15 millimeters long and protrudes into the perigone tube . The tepals are greenish gray on the outside, occasionally tinged with brown or darker green on top and golden green on the inside. The narrow, funnel-shaped tube is slightly curved and has a length of 15 to 20 millimeters. Their elongated, upright spread out at the top, turned back at the bottom are 12 to 15 millimeters long. The stamens are flattened, the stylus protrudes over the flower tube by 22 to 25 (rarely up to 32) millimeters.

The ellipsoidal fruits are 2 to 2.6 inches long and 1 cm wide. They contain seeds 3 to 4 millimeters long and 3 to 4.5 millimeters wide.

Systematics and distribution

Agave longibracteata is found in the Mexican state of Michoacán between rocks at altitudes of around 2070 meters.

The first description as Manfreda longibracteata by Susan Verhoek was published in 1978. Joachim Thiede and Urs Eggli placed the species in the genus Agave in 1999 .

The species belongs to the subgenus Manfreda and is assigned to the Manfreda group there.
