description

Agave mckelveyana grows solitary and forms runners with a diameter of up to 40 cm. The green to bluish, linear to lanceolate, irregularly arranged leaves are 20 to 35 cm long and 3.5 cm wide. The wavy leaf edges are variably toothed red-brown. The gray to brown end thorn is 1.5 to 4 cm long.

The paniculate, slender inflorescence becomes 2 to 3 m high. The narrow, yellow flowers are 30 to 40 mm long and appear on the upper part of the inflorescence on the variably arranged, short branches. The flower tube is 3 to 5 mm long.

The elongated, brown three-chambered capsule fruits are 30 to 45 mm long and 10 to 14 mm wide. The black seeds are 5 to 6.5 mm long and 4 to 4.5 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from May to July.

Systematics and distribution

Agave mckelveyana is common in the southwestern United States in Arizona on stony slopes, in grasslands, desert and mountain regions, and open woodlands at altitudes of 900 to 2200 m. It is associated with numerous types of cacti and succulents.

The first description by Howard Scott Gentry was published in 1970.

Agave mckelveyana is a representative of the Deserticolae section . It has limited growth in central to western Arizona. Typical are the small rosettes and the narrow green to bluish, toothed leaves with the long inflorescences. It is related to Agave deserti subsp. simplex , which is located at lower altitudes in the Sonoran Desert.

Agave mckelveyana hybridizes with Agave deserti subsp. simplex and Agave utahensis subsp. utahensis . It can withstand periods of frost down to −15 ° C when it is dry.
