Agave moranii is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Moran's Agave".

description

Agave moranii grows solitary with a short trunk. The large rosettes are 100 to 150 cm high and up to 200 cm wide. The triangular, stiff, rutty, green to bluish, lanceolate, irregularly arranged leaves are 70 to 120 cm long and 8 to 12 cm wide. The white-colored, horny leaf margins are variably serrated light gray. The strong end thorn is 4 to 6 cm long.

The paniculate, strong inflorescence is 4 to 5 m high. The numerous yellow flowers are 50 to 70 mm long and appear in the middle to the tip of the inflorescence on irregularly arranged branches. The broad, funnel-shaped flower tube is 4 to 6 mm long.

The elongated yellow to brown three-chambered capsule fruits are 50 to 70 mm long and 16 to 20 mm wide. The variably shaped, black, shiny seeds are 7 to 8 mm long and 5 to 6 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from May to July.

Systematics and distribution

Agave moranii grows in Mexico, in Baja California Norte, in limited desert zones at an altitude of 450 to 1850 m. It is associated with succulents and cacti species.

The first description by Gentry was published in 1978.

Agave moranii is a representative of the Deserticolae group . It grows on and near the western slopes of the Sierra San Pedro Martir. Typical are the large, individual rosettes with the stiff, variably arranged leaves, the white-colored horny leaf margins and the long terminal spines. Agave moranii is closely linked to the other members of the Deserticolae group Agave avellanidens and Agave gigantensis . It is closely related to Agave turneri , but there are differences in the structure of the flowers and leaves. In the Arroyo-el-Alamar region, hybrids between Agave moranii and Agave desertii var. Pringlei are known. Agave moranii is grown in the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, in Tucson.
