description

Agave palmeri forms open rosettes and sometimes forms sparse runners. It reaches heights of 50 to 120 centimeters and a diameter of 100 to 120 centimeters. The variable, runny, linear to lanceolate, light green to bluish, leaves are 35 to 75 cm long and 7 to 10 cm wide. The wavy leaf edges are serrated variably. The brown end thorn is 3 to 6 cm long.

The paniculate, slender, broad, straight inflorescence becomes 3 to 5 m high. The narrow yellow to greenish flowers are 45 to 55 mm long and appear on the upper part of the inflorescence on irregularly arranged branches. The flower tube is 12 to 14 mm long.

The elongated three-chamber capsule fruits are 35 to 60 mm long and 18 to 20 mm wide. The flat, black seeds are 5 to 7 mm long and 4 to 5 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60.

Systematics and distribution

Agave palmeri grows in Arizona and New Mexico in the United States as well as in Mexico in Sonora and Chihuahua on limestone slopes, in grass and woodlands at an altitude of 900 to 1800 m. It is associated with numerous cacti and succulent species.

The first description by George Engelmann was published in 1875.

Agave palmeri is a representative of the Ditepalae section . It shows the slender and open inflorescence typical of this section. The species is closely related to Agave chrysantha , with which it hybridizes in Arizona, but differences in leaf and flower structure become clear. The species can tolerate short periods of frost down to minus 8 ° C when dry and is cultivated in the Desert Botanic Garden in Arizona.
