The green, linear, lanceolate, tapering, tiny dotted leaves are 35 to 50 cm long and 3 to 5 cm wide. The white leaf margins are smooth. The pointed, reddish end thorn becomes 4 to 7 cm long.
The year-old straight to curved, narrow inflorescence is 2 to 3 m high. The bell-shaped, red flowers are 30 to 50 mm long, appear close to the upper part of the inflorescence. The funnel-shaped flower tube is 8 to 9 mm long.
The elongated to egg-shaped brown three-chambered capsule fruits are 25 to 30 mm long and 12 to 15 mm wide. The variably shaped, black seeds are up to 5 mm long and 5 mm wide.
The flowering period extends from April to May.
Systematics and distribution
Agave pelona grows endemically in Mexico in the state of Sonora on limestone slopes at an altitude of 500 to 1200 m.
The first description by Gentry was published in 1972.
Agave pelona is a member of the Marginatae group and has limited growth in and near the Caborca region. Typical are the somewhat stem-forming rosettes with strong dark green leaves and red bell-shaped flowers. It is geographically isolated from the rest of the species in the group. Because of the flower structure, the species could be assigned to the Filifera group (Gentry 1982: p. 169).
