The first description by William Trelease was published in 1920.

Agave potrerana is a member of the Marginatae group . Their occurrence is limited to the states of Chihuahua and Coahuila in Mexico. Rose (1897) reports from a location near San Juan Capistrano in Zacatecas . (Gentry 1982, p. 193). It grows up to higher regions in exposed areas in the Sierra del Carmen with severe frosts. The compact rosettes have numerous, lanceolate, stiff leaves. Characteristic is the 3 to 8 m high, straight to curved inflorescence with the red colored flowers. Agave potrerana of the higher mountain regions can withstand periods of frost down to minus 1 ° C when dry.
