Agave scaposa is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Century Plant".

description

Agave scaposa grows singly and forms a short trunk. The rosettes are 150 to 200 cm wide. The green to bluish lanceolate, variably arranged, fleshy, rough leaves are 100 to 115 cm long and 20 to 25 cm wide. The brown leaf margins are serrated irregularly. The dark brown end thorn is 2.5 to 6 cm long.

The paniculate, straight to slightly curved inflorescence is 7 to 9 m high. The loose to dense branches appear on the upper half and extend to the tip. The flowers are unknown.

The elongated brown three-chamber capsule fruits are 50 to 55 mm long and 20 to 25 mm wide. The black seeds are 7 to 9 mm long and 5 to 6 mm wide.

Systematics and distribution

Agave scaposa grows in Mexico in the states of Oaxaca and Puebla on limestone slopes and in grasslands at an altitude of 1850 m to 2100 m. It is associated with succulent and cactus species.

The first description by Howard Scott Gentry was published in 1982.

Agave scaposa is a representative of the Americanae section . The species is rare and only known from northern Oaxaca and southern Puebla. The strong, straight to slightly curved inflorescences up to 9 meters long are characteristic. On the upper half, they form loose to dense branches reaching to the tip.
