Agave toumeyana is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ).

description

Agave toumeyana forms large, compact groups with heights of 20 to 30 cm and 30 to 80 diameter. The green, variably arranged, stiff or curved, linear to lanceolate leaves with the pointed gray to brown terminal spine are 20 to 30 cm long and 15 to 20 mm wide. The fibrous leaf margins are irregularly serrated near the base.

The paniculate or grape-like inflorescence becomes 200 to 300 cm high. The cup-like yellow to greenish flowers appear on the upper part of the inflorescence and are 18 to 25 mm long and 9 to 12 mm wide.

The short to elongated three-chambered capsule fruits are 12 to 15 mm long and 8 to 10 mm wide. The black, irregularly shaped seeds are 2 to 3 mm long.

The flowering period extends from June to July.

Systematics and distribution

Agave toumeyana grows endemically in central Arizona in the United States on stony slopes, in open woodland at an altitude of 600 to 1600 m. It is associated with Echinocereus apachensis and other cacti and succulent species.

The first description by William Trelease was published in 1920.

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Agave toumeyana subsp. toumeyana
  • Agave toumeyana subsp. bella (spreading) gentry (Syn .: Agave toumeyana var. bella spreading ). The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60.

Agave toumeyana is a member of the Parviflorae group and is endemic to central Arizona. Characteristic are compact, large, dense groups with green, variably arranged, stiff or curved leaves with the white prints. The brown leaf margins are sometimes toothed and irregularly fibrous. The subspecies Agave toumeyana subsp. bella is smaller in all dimensions and at first glance can be confused with Agave parviflora . However, differences in leaf and flower structure can be seen.

Agave toumeyana can withstand short periods of frost down to −10 ° C when it is dry.
