Aghast was a Norwegian post-industrial project by the two artists Tania Stene and Andrea Haugen , who were married to musicians Fenriz and Samoth from the Norwegian black metal scene and under the pseudonyms Nacht (or Nachthexe) and Nebel (or Nebelhexe) occurred.

history

In 1995 Aghast released the album Hexerei im Zwielicht der Darkis via Cold Meat Industry , which was recorded with the four-track recording device from Fenriz. Two of the titles also appeared on the compilations … And Even Wolves Hid Their Teeth and Tongue Wherever Shelter Was Given and Taste This 4 .

After the album, work on Aghast was stopped; According to Haugen, Stene preferred to spend her time in the company of men rather than professionally working on her music, so Haugen took over the work, while Stene considered herself important because she was in a band. At first she wanted to make ambient music under her own name , but discovered folk for herself and began, inspired by the project Hagalaz 'Runedance ; In retrospect, however, she said that she wished she had stayed with the ambient and announced a spoken word CD with dark ambient sounds that the fans of Aghast would probably like. Stene, in turn, worked as a guest singer on Northaunts album The Ominous Silence and designed record covers for bands such as Ulver , Sunn O))) and Burzum .

In 2010 Haugen announced a new dark ambient project called Aghast Manor, which produced an album Gaslights in 2012 .

style

Aghast's style can be described as Dark Ambient . Instruments used are synthesizer , violin , flute / recorder and drum . The singing was described as demonic , the music as creepy, frightening or spooky, but also as sinister, atmospheric opus. It is inspired by the musicians' visions of nocturnal landscapes, sinister images, emotions, the dark side of Nordic mythology and generally visions of the grotesque and ghostly. The music is kept minimal and calm, “without any outbursts, without any unpredictable events. This makes the work appear closed, however, should it be consumed in one piece anyway. ”The whispered voices in Enter the Hall of Ice ,“ evocative ”vocals in Call from the Grave or the“ distinctive melody ”in Sacrifice bring variety . In keeping with the self-image of the musicians as witches , both the singing and the drumming were called shamanic .
