Aghulic (also called Agulic , own name: aġul č′al ) belongs to the Lesgic group of the Northeast Caucasian (post-Dagestan) language family and is spoken by over 17,000 people in the Autonomous Republic of Dagestan ( Russian Federation ).
It is divided into two dialects : Koshan and the actual Aghulic.
In 1990 a written language based on the Cyrillic alphabet was introduced. Previously, only Lesgic and Russian were used as languages for correspondence.
Linguistic characteristics
In Aghul there is u. a. the “ umlauts ” ä , ö and ü as well as pharyngealized variants of the vowels a and u . The consonants of Aghul can be divided into voiced , aspirated , geminated and ejective . With 73 consonants, Aghul has the most consonants of any Northeast Caucasian language.
It has 28 cases , including the ergative and 24 locatives .
The verb does not denote person , number or class , but the language uses pre-verbs .
