action
Eleonora Hed, called Nora, lost her parents in an accident when she was five years old. She then grows up with a foster family. The foster family consists of the married couple Anders and Karin and their son Dag, who is the same age. Anders is a teacher and Karin is a librarian. When the family moved to an old house twelve years later, they discovered an old photograph and ballet shoes of the former occupant of the house. They belonged to the ballet dancer Cecilia.
The photograph shows the dancer as a child with her aunt Hedwig and her mother Agnes. Nora learns that Agnes is her great-grandmother. Since Cecilia was born out of wedlock in 1906, Agnes gave her away as a child to be married in 1910. Agnes married a merchant from Stockholm and had a daughter with him, Vera, who later became Nora's grandmother.
The ballet dancer Cecilia became pregnant by her ballet teacher, who refused to marry Cecilia. Cecilia died when the boy was born. The boy, named Martin, was put up for adoption. As a grown man, Martin fathered a girl, Carita, who is named after both his great-grandmother Agnes and his grandmother Cecilia. The young Agnes Cecilia Eng, also calls herself Tetti and becomes friends with Dag and Nora.
