The former rural community Ahja ( Ahja vald ) is located in southeast Estonia . It belonged to the Põlva County . Their area was 72.2 km². It had 998 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016). Ahja has been part of the Põlva municipality since 2017 .

Villages

In addition to the main town Ahja , the municipality includes the villages of Akste , Ibaste , Kärsa , Kosova , Loko , Mustakurmu , Mõtsküla and Vanamõisa .

Personalities

  • Ahja is the birthplace of the Estonian writer Friedebert Tuglas , who was heavily inspired by his homeland in his novel Väike Illimari .
