Akste

Akste is a village ( Estonian küla ) in southeast Estonia . It belongs to the Põlva Municipality (until 2017 Ahja ) in the Põlva County .
Population and location
The village has 67 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).
It is located 33 kilometers southeast of the second largest Estonian city of Tartu . The Ahja River (Ahja jõgi) flows east of the village center .
The place was first mentioned in 1582 under the name Hakstkula .
Wood ants
A biological research station has been located in Akste since 1974, specializing in wood ants . The focus is on the Formica aquilonia and the Formica fusca .
In August 1977, an approx. 200 hectare reserve was created to protect the ant colonies. There are over 2000 anthills in it. Some are up to a hundred years old.
