Ahmad al-Alawi , also Sheikh Alaoui ( Arabic أحمد العلاوي, DMG Aḥmad al-ʿAlawī ; born 1874 in Mostaganem , Algeria ; died 1934 ibid) was a Sufi saint of an originally Maghrebian Sufi order . After the death of his master Muhammad al-Būzīdī (1824-1909) he headed the order until his own death, ie he was the founder of the modern Sufi order of the Alawiyya , a branch of the Darqawiyya - Schadhiliyya order.

life and work

He went to Morocco in 1894 and followed Darqawiyya Sheikh Muhammad al-Būzīdī. When he came back to Mustaganem, he founded the Alawiyya Darqawiyya Order. His order spread to North Africa, especially Algeria and Morocco, and among the Algerian immigrants of several European countries, especially France . He is now also active in many other countries around the world.

In 1926, Ahmad al-Alawi led the first community prayer in the newly built Great Mosque in Paris in the presence of French President Gaston Doumergue .

The shrine and tomb of Sheikh Ahmad al-Alawi are located in Mostaganem, Algeria.

His activities included the publication of two magazines: from 1922 he published a religious weekly, "Lisan ad-Din" ("The tongue (= voice) of religion"), which he published in 1926 through the magazine "Al-Balagh Al -Jaza'iri "(" 'Algerian communications ") replaced.

One of his works is his Munadschat (also Munajat), which was translated into English by Abdul-Majid Bhurgri.

By Martin Lings (Abu Bakr Sheikh Sirajuddin) a highly acclaimed biography of the Sufi saint comes. The memories of the French doctor Marcel Carret provide important information about the sheikh. The Sufi community Les amis de l'Islam , founded by Sheikh Adda Bentounès (1898–1952), took care of a French translation of various works. In more recent times, Éric Geoffroy and Manuel Chabry have made a name for themselves in researching his oeuvre and order.

Quote

"In his autobiographical remarks Shaykh Al-Alawi says of himself that he never went to school," not even for a single day "- and that he never made any special effort to learn to write."
