Seyyed Hossein Nasr ( Persian سید حسین نصر, Born April 7, 1933 in Tehran , Iran ) is an Iranian professor of Islamic studies at George Washington University and an eminent Islamic philosopher . He is the author of more than 50 books and 500 articles in Persian , English , Arabic and French on Islam and Sufism . Because of his work in the field of traditional Islam and Islamic philosophy, he remains one of the most influential Islamic scholars in the world .

Nasr was the first Muslim to give the prestigious Gifford Lectures at the University of Edinburgh in 1980/81 entitled Knowledge and the Sacred, and in 2001 a volume in the Library of Living Philosophers was dedicated to him.

Professor Nasr's lectures and writings on the subjects of philosophy, religion, spirituality, music, art, architecture, science, literature, intercultural dialogue and the environment are shaped by the teachings and perspectives of Philosophia perennis . In particular, the influence of Frithjof Schuon and Titus Burckhardt should be mentioned in this context. He also wrote two books of poetry ( Poems of the Way (1999) and The Pilgrimage of Life and the Wisdom of Rumi (2007) ) and was consequently as a polymath called.

Nasr is fluent in Persian, English, French, German , Spanish , Arabic and he has language skills in Italian , Greek and Latin .

Life

Seyyed Hossein Nasr was born in Tehran on April 7, 1933. His mother was the granddaughter of Sheikh Fazlollah Nuri , who was hanged in 1909 as an opponent of the Constitutional Revolution .

Seyyed Hossein Nasr studied physics in Tehran, and then in the USA at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and history at Harvard University . He returned to Iran in 1958. After his return he took on an assistant position at the Faculty of Literature at the University of Tehran. In 1968 he became dean of the Faculty of Literature. 1972 Nasr became rector of Ariamehr University (today: Sharif University) . In 1973 he became president of the Andschoman-e Schahanschahi-e Falsafeh (Royal Academy of Philosophy), founded under the auspices of Shahbanu Farah Pahlavi . Other founding members were Ehsan Naraghi , Abdolhossein Zarinkoob , Mohsen Foroughi, Nader Naderpour and Seyyed Jalal Ashtiani. Nasr later became head of Farah Pahlavi's office. Nasr welcomed the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran but soon left Iran and became Professor of Islamic Studies at George Washington University in the United States in 1984.

Nasr believes that Western values ​​are meaningless to Iran. Instead, he considers Islamic values ​​and philosophy to be groundbreaking for Iran. Nasr rejects modernity and considers the materialistic West to be spiritually retarded:
