Ahmed Naas ( Arabic أحمد ناس, DMG Aḥmad Nās ; born February 5, 1992 ) is an Iraqi athlete . He competed in the javelin in the Paralympic classes F40 and F41 . His greatest achievement was a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games in London .

Life

Ahmed Naas grew up in Batha , Dhi Qar , south of Baghdad . His family runs a grocery store there, in which he also works. He is short and one of seven brothers.

Ahmed Naas began spear throwing training in Iraq but took a break in 2009 after one of his coaches claimed he lacked athletic skills. He resumed training a year later and became a Paralympic professional in 2011. He qualified for the Paralympic team and competed in the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. He started there in the F40 class and threw 43.27 meters on his fifth attempt. With that he set a new Paralympic record. He celebrated this with a triple turn of the wheel , at the end of which he put his fist up on his knees, whereupon the audience applauded loudly. However, his record was surpassed on the same day by the Chinese athlete Wang Zhiming , who threw 47.95 meters. In the further course of the competition it was surpassed nine more times. Nevertheless, he got the most applause at the awards ceremony.

Ahmed Naas hoped for a better life in his homeland. He expected to be celebrated as a star there, especially since it was one of only eight medals that athletes in his country had won since first participating in 1992 . With his prize money (approx. 26,000 euros) he bought a small piece of land in Batha. However, his further hopes were not fulfilled and he had to continue working in the family business.

Naas also competed at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , but the category system had since been changed. The additional class for short athletes, which was first introduced in 2012, has been abolished. The introduction of a points-based regulation, which would have compensated for particularly short athletes, was also dispensed with. Instead, he had to compete in class F41. There he reached 35.29 meters, ironically a new world record in the F40 class, but Naas only finished ninth in the competition.

This was repeated in a similar form a year later at the World Athletics Championships for the disabled in 2017 : Naas had to compete again in the F41 class, finished fifth, but set a new world record in the F40 class with 38.90 meters. At the 2019 World Cup , he also reached 5th place again.
