Origin and meaning
The name with the pronunciation a.ˈida (emphasis on the i) appears for the first time in a story by the Egyptologist Auguste Mariette and the author may have based it on an ancient Egyptian name. He gained greater fame through the eponymous character in Giuseppe Verdi's opera Aida , which is based on the story of Mariette. The meaning is unclear.
In the Arabic-speaking world, the name is given with the pronunciation ˈa.ida (emphasis on the A). He then means "visitor" or "returnee" in Arabic عائِد ( ʿāʾid ). Ayda is a variant of the writing.

After the premiere of Verdi's opera in 1871, it took a few years for the name of the heroine to be included in the general naming. It has only appeared in the German-speaking area since the 20th century.
