Aiging is part of the municipality of Nußdorf in the Traunstein district in Upper Bavaria . The third largest town in the municipality with 560 inhabitants (as of 2008) borders directly on the city of Traunstein in the south .

history

The establishment of the village of Aiging goes back to the 6th century AD, making it one of the oldest villages in the region. The rather unusual name is a mixture of the Romance "Agius" and the Germanic ending "ing" and does not appear twice anywhere in the world. Many villages in the foothills of the Alps were only founded by the Romanized Celts from the 8th century, making Aiging one of the few settlements of Bavarian origin.

Even in Celtic times, Aiging was an important traffic junction on the great Roman road from Salzburg to Augsburg and a junction to Altenmarkt . The route was particularly important in the Middle Ages when the "white gold" was transported from Reichenhall via Traunstein to the whole of southern Germany. In order to avoid the toll in Traunstein, another route was created via Schönram and Waging , which was then banned by the city of Traunstein's statutory provisions. The upper salt road through Aiging thus remained the main trade route for salt, which was so heavily used from the 14th century that a rest stop was finally built in Aiging in 1471. The building, which is now well over 500 years old, is still in operation today as a tavern. In 1762 the new "Land- und Salzstraße nach Traunstein" was put into operation, which no longer ran through Herbstdorf and Biebing. The course of this former trade route is still used today by the federal highway 304.

Economy and Infrastructure

Aiging has developed into the most important business location in the municipality of Nussdorf in recent years. Due to the location directly on the federal highway 304 and the direct proximity to the city of Traunstein, the industrial area Aiging is an attractive location for manufacturing, regional companies. With an outsourced steel bending shop of JN KREILLER KG and the Eberl forwarding company with almost 140 employees, two medium-sized companies are now also based here.

Another important industry is the mining of gravel . There are a total of three active gravel pits in and around Aiging. The western part of the village is also located in a former mining area.

In Aiging, as well as in some other districts of the municipality, fiber optic cables have been laid since 2011 to significantly increase the Internet bandwidth. The municipality of Nussdorf was a pioneer in this area, as it was the first in the Traunstein district to use this fiber optic cable.

Future development

It has been known since the beginning of 2017 that the city of Traunstein and the municipality of Nußdorf are planning an intermunicipal industrial park. The Aiging industrial area is to be combined with the adjacent Traunstein Nord industrial area and connected to the adjacent federal highway 304. With this, Aiging would further expand its economic importance in the community.

Attractions

Aiging inn 1471, tavern

The Tafernwirtschaft from 1471 is the oldest building in the Nussdorf community and one of the oldest inns in Bavaria.

The inn was rebuilt and enlarged in 1794 due to the increasing volume of traffic. Stables, workshops, blacksmiths and weavers were employed who took care of the numerous horses and carts. The building grew to an imposing size and became one of the most important intermediate stops on the trade route from Bad Reichenhall and Salzburg. Since then, some parts of the building have had baroque shapes. In the 19th century, the building was greatly reduced in size, today only the residential and hostel areas remain. The inn is located on the former Roman and Salt Road between Augsburg and Salzburg. In 2006 it was completely renovated as part of the village renewal and inaugurated in May 2007. Since then, there has been a constant change of tenants and is therefore often not open for months. In 2016 it was used as a filming location for an episode of the Kabel Eins documentary soap “ Mein Lokal, Dein Lokal ”, which made the management situation known across the region . The Nussdorf municipality has owned the inn since 2004.
