Air Burkina (originally Air Volta ) is the national airline of Burkina Faso , based in Ouagadougou and based at Ouagadougou Airport .
history
Air Burkina began operating on March 17, 1967 under the name Air Volta as a joint venture between the government of Upper Volta , the French airline Union de Transports Aériens (UTA) and private investors. Initially, two Piper PA-32s were used . In the mid-1970s, a De Havilland Canada DHC-6 added to the fleet, which until then consisted only of small aircraft . In August 1978 Air Volta took over an Embraer EMB 110 and in January 1983 their first Fokker F28 .
Shortly after the Sankarist revolution in 1983, the company was largely nationalized and renamed Air Burkina a year later as a result of the change of the state name (from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso) . Despite increasing demand, Air Burkina was unable to maintain its economic position. The debt burden increased in 1994 due to the devaluation of the CFA franc . After the decline of the airline Air Afrique , in which the Burkinabe state also held a stake and which held 17 percent of the shares in Air Burkina, the state company was partially privatized in 2001. The share capital was increased to 3.5 billion CFA, with 66% of the shares owned by the AKFED / IPS consortium, which is part of the Aga Khan Development Network . In May 2017 the Burkinabe state took over 51% of the 56% shares from AKFED. The state has been looking for a new owner for Air Burkina since June 2017.
In July 2019 it was announced that the airline would be privatized again, as it had between 2001 and 2017.
