Aivo Välja

Aivo Välja (born March 15, 1968 ) is an Estonian conductor .

Life and music

Aivo Välja completed his studies in choral conducting with Olev Oja in 1994 and orchestral conducting with Roman Matsov and Paul Mägi at the Estonian Academy of Music in Tallinn in 1998 . Masterclasses took Välja to Hamburg , Vienna , Helsinki and from 1996 to 1998 at the St. Petersburg Conservatory . In 1996 he received a diploma in St. Petersburg for his successful performance at the Sergej Prokofieff competition.

Aivo Välja has been a full-time conductor at the Estonia National Opera in the Estonian capital since 2001 , where he has been conducting regularly since 1994. From 2001 to 2007 he was first conductor there . During this time he directed about 70 performances of the State Opera per season. In 2003 he received a scholarship from the Richard Wagner Foundation for the Bayreuth Festival .

In the 2009/2010 season Aivo Välja on was Schleswig-Holstein State Theater with ballet performances to be heard. In 2011 he conducted the revival of Don Quixote at the Finnish State Opera.

He directed the premiere of Orpheus in der Unterwelt at the Landestheater Schleswig-Holstein as well as the performances of Mozart's Don Quixote and Neumeier's The Nutcracker at the Bavarian State Ballet. For the latter, he received the 2014 Rose Culture Prize from the Munich daily tz . In 2017 he also conducted the ballet Giselle based on Adolphe Adam in Munich . Another highlight of his career was conducting Le Corsaire after Petipa and Liška at the Finnish State Opera, which was also performed in Munich in 2015/2016.
