Akbarpur ( Hindi : अकबरपुर , Urdu : اکبر پور; Akbarpur , [ ˈʌkbʌrpʊr ]) is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh with around 110,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

It is located 60 kilometers southeast of Faizabad and 140 kilometers northwest of Varanasi in the east of the Awadh (Oudh) region on the banks of the Tamsa (Tons) River . The city is the administrative seat of the Ambedkar Nagar District .

Akbarpur is named after the Mughal -Kaiser Akbar I named. During his reign in the 16th century, the local ruler Mohsin Khan built a fortress, which is now only in ruins, and a bridge over the Tamsa in Akbarpur.

The national highway NH 232 runs from Sultanpur, 50 km west-southwest, via Akbarpur to Basti . The railway line from Varanasi to Faizabad also runs through Akbarpur.
