Akira Lenting ( Japanese レ ン テ ィ ン グ 陽 , Rentingu Akira ; born August 11, 1990 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese cross-country skier .

Career

Born in Tokyo to a New Zealander and a Japanese woman, he grew up in Shinano . In middle school he joined their ski club, where he won the Japanese middle school championships in 5 km classic in the 9th grade and at the Japanese Youth Olympic Games (junior ski championships) in classic 10 km cross-country skiing. In 2007/08 he was second at the Interhigh Championships, and 29th classically at the World Junior Championships in Italy and the following year in Praz-de-Lys-Sommand, ninth place in the skiathlon and eleven in skating. He studied at Waseda University until March 2013 .

Lenting has mainly participated in the Far East Cup since 2008 . He has won 11 victories so far and won the overall standings in the 2010/11 and 2015/16 seasons. In 2011/12 , 2012/13 and 2013/14 he was third and in 2016/17 second in the overall ranking. He ran his first World Cup race in November 2010 in Gällivare , which he finished classically in 83rd place over 15 km. His best placings at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme were 44th place in the 30 km skiathlon and eighth place in the relay. In the 2013/14 season he got his first World Cup points with the 26th place in the pursuit in Kuusamo and the 28th place over 15 km classic in Toblach . At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he finished 16th with the relay. His best results at the 2015 Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun were 25th place in the skiathlon and 12th place in the relay. In the 2016/17 season he finished 56th in the World Cup mini tour in Lillehammer and 48th in the World Cup final in Québec . At the Winter Asian Games 2017 in Sapporo , he won the bronze medal over 15 km freestyle and the gold medal in the 30 km mass start race, with the relay and over 10 km classic.
