history

Today's Società Sportiva Akragas Città dei Templi was founded in 1939. The association is based in Agrigento , which now has around 60,000 inhabitants on the south coast of Sicily . The club did not play in the league in the first eleven years of its existence, but only got into it in 1950. From this year on, the club , which was then called Segretariato Nazionale Gioventù Akragas , played in regional leagues on the Italian island. In 1952 the club merged with AC Agrigento to form Unione Sportiva Akragas . The club operated under this name in the following years and slowly gained in importance. By 1959, a boom that the club up to the third-class managed Series C transported. There, in the first third-class year in the club's history, they held their own with the eighth rank of the Girone C. In the following years, the US Akragas asserted themselves safely in the third division, in the 1962/63 season they missed the first jump into the second class Serie B as third in the C / C series by only seven points over SC Potenza . After that, the results gradually got worse and Akragas found himself year after year in the relegation battle of Serie C. After the end of the 1967/68 season, the US Akragas finally had to go back to Serie D as third from bottom of the C / C series and two points behind the first non-relegated SS Barletta after nine years of third division .

Akragas also played there for many years before relegation to the fifth-rate Promozione Sicily in 1977, whereupon, however, the immediate return to Serie D succeeded. There, the US Akragas established themselves in the top third of the table and after the end of the 1980/81 season managed to be the first of the Girone F of Serie D to climb up to Serie C2 , which was the fourth highest Italian league since its foundation in 1978. After eleventh place in the premiere season, the US Akragas ended the 1982/83 season in second place in the Girone D of the C2 series, only behind FC Messina . This entitled to promotion to the C1 series and thus to a return to the third division. In this league, however, the club could not hold its own for long and was relegated again after only two seasons. This relegation was the beginning of a gradual decline of the US Akragas, which eventually ended in the dissolution and subsequent re-establishment of the club in 1988. After they had slowly worked their way up again, a further re-establishment took place in 1993, after which the club ran up as Akragas Calcio and played in Serie C2 for another year, but was transferred to the Eccellenza Sicily by the Italian Football Association in 1994 and subsequently as an Associazione Sportiva Akragas continued to play.

Until 2013, the club played for many years in the island's Eccellenza, which is only the sixth highest level of the Italian football system. In 2013 the club, meanwhile renamed Unione Sportiva Dilettantistica Akragas - Città dei Templi , managed to return to Serie D, where they immediately landed on second place in the table and missed the direct march into the Lega Pro by only ten points compared to AC Savoia 1908 . The following year this venture succeeded and the USD Akragas finished the Girone I of the Serie D in first place in the table with a lead of nine points on ASD SS Rende . After exactly thirty years it was clear that the club would return to the third division. In the year of the rise, the club renamed itself again and has been running since then under the name Società Sportiva Akragas Città dei Templi .
