Akron is a town in Hale County in the US state of Alabama .

geography

Akron is about halfway between Moundville (≈16 km) and Eutow . Interstate 59 and 20 also provide connections to Meridan (≈110 km) and Tuscaloosa (≈50 km), among others .

history

One structure in Akron is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 19, 2020, the Tanglewood Plantation House .

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Akron 521 people inhabited the city. The population density was 365.7 people per km ². There were 239 housing units at an average of 167.8 per km ². The Hoquiam population was 17.85% white , 81.00% black or African American , and 1.15% named two or more races. 1.54% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The residents of Akrons were distributed to 207 households out of which 36.7% had children under 18 years of age. 34.8% of households were married, 30.9% had a female head of the household without a husband and 31.4% were not families. 28.5% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 14.5% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.15.

The urban population was divided between 29.4% minors, 9.8% 18–24 year olds, 25.3% 25–44 year olds, 20.9% 45–64 year olds and 14.6% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 women there were 81.5 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 68.8 men.

The median household income in Akron was 19,875 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 21,250 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 22,396, compared to $ 18,500 for women. The per capita income for Akron was $ 10,929. 40.7% of the population and 37.1% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 60.2% of minors and 32.7% of those aged 65 and over.
