action

In 2012 the world of the rich and famous is shaken by the terrorist organization "Aktion Mutante". Led by the disfigured Ramón Yarritu, this group, consisting exclusively of mutants, disabled people and communists, carries out attacks on celebrities and representatives of the "upper class".

The film begins with a failed kidnapping attempt by the President of the Association for Health and Physical Culture, Mathias Pont. He suffocates on a gag that was not properly applied by the activists of the "Aktion Mutante". The said attackers then disappear and meet their boss Ramón, who has just been released from prison, on the “Virgen del Carmen”, the organization's spaceship. He has to overlook the failed action for the time being, as the group's big coup is imminent: The kidnapping of Patricia Orujo, the daughter of the founder of a giant baked goods company, at her wedding in Madrid . One of the kidnappers hides with a submachine gun in the hollow inside of a fake cake, into which Patricia (according to the plan) is to be put in an unobserved moment, stunned and brought out unseen. When the unsuspecting victim cuts this cake, however, she inflicts a serious injury on the kidnapper, who jumps out of the cake and fires indiscriminately into the crowd. Thereupon the situation escalates and the other members of Aktion Mutante, who were able to mingle with the guests as cake deliverers, now also open fire on the rest of those present. In addition to many bystanders, some members of the terrorist organization die in this shooting, whereupon those who remain are able to overpower Patricia Orujo and finally escape. Shortly afterwards, the remaining terrorists with the hostage reached the starting point of the kidnapping, the “Virgen del Carmen”. In a video message, Ramón Patricia's father sends a ransom demand in the amount of 100,000,000 ECU and the place where the money was handed over, the "Lost Mine Bar" on the desert planet Axturias. During the flight there, Ramón tries to eliminate the remaining Aktion Mutante members so that he can keep the ransom to himself. When the "boss" kills Juan Abadie, one of the two Siamese twins who have grown together at the shoulder, a fight with the other twin, Alex, ensues. In doing so, however, the ship's navigation system is disregarded, which reports that the ship is on a collision course with the desert planet, so that it eventually crashes.

Meanwhile, Fernando Orujo, father of the kidnapped, has set off with an armed squad on his own without the police to Axturias and finally lands after watching the destruction of the ship “Virgen del Carmen”. After the crash, it turns out that in addition to Ramón and Patricia, Alex Abadie also survived. While the latter goes aimlessly with his overgrown dead brother in the mountains bordering the crash site, Ramón ties the hostage and goes in search of the Lost Mine Bar. On the way there Patricia declares her love for her kidnapper several times , but he reveals this feeling as a result of Stockholm Syndrome . On the way they meet a crazy boy who leads them to his family's house. Ramón hopes to find out where the Lost Mine Bar is by questioning them. A little later, the two are overwhelmed by three men and the boy who initially wanted to help them in their house, Ramón is tortured by the boy with a razor blade , salt and vinegar and Patricia threatens to be sexually abused by the three men.

Alex, on the other hand, makes the acquaintance of one of the inhabitants of the planet who takes care of him. According to him, there hasn't been a single woman on Axturias for decades. When Alex then tells that a woman is about to show up at the Lost Mine Bar, the blind Axturian immediately agrees to show him the way there. Patricia has now been able to free herself unharmed with the help of the boy whom she bribed with her panties. The three men were tied up naked by her in the bedroom, then they freed Ramón and then found the bar. A short time later, Fernando Orujo also appears, albeit in the involuntary company of a television team, declares the kidnapping over and asks for his daughter. This, however, takes the side of Ramón - who does not approve of this, since he is only aiming for the ransom - and steals the suitcase in which Fernando claims to have deposited the money. But when it emerges that the contents of the suitcase contain porn magazines instead of money , the situation escalates: Ramón grabs his gun blind in anger and wants to shoot Fernando. However, the latter pulls out a bomb and threatens to blow up the entire bar. Just in time, Alex suddenly appears accompanied by the four Axturians and kills Fernando. Then there is another shootout between Ramón and the bartender he is friends with on the one hand, and Alex and his cronies on the other. After a while, Ramón eventually runs out of ammunition, whereupon Patricia throws herself between the fronts, ending the fight. However, the time fuse of the bomb is unintentionally activated. Ramón takes this and storms outside with her to kill the police officers who have since arrived there . After the devastating explosion, the partially underground bar is half-buried. Alex must part with his dead brother by severing his rotting body from the shoulder. On the way out he finds Patricia, mutilated by a fallen piece of metal, and they both climb the steps to the exit together.

background

production

  • Antonio Resines, the actor of Aktion Mutante leader Ramón Yarritu and director Álex de la Iglesia already knew each other from earlier productions such as “Todo por la pasta” (1991). Although Resines is better known as an actor in society films in Spain, he accepted because of his friendship with de la Iglesia.
  • The special effects technicians so badly needed for a science fiction film were very difficult to find in Spain, as there was practically no film industry in the country at the time that trained such specialists.

various

  • Since the director de la Iglesia comes from the Basque Country , voices were raised in the run-up to the film that feared the politicization of “Aktion Mutante” because the terrorist organization there would show parallels with the real ETA . This was vehemently denied by the director.
  • The team that created the “Virgen del Carmen” also built the spaceships for the film The Desert Planet .
  • The film was supposed to end with the words "Goodbye"; This part, however, was again cut out .

Awards

In 1993 Aktion Mutante won a total of three Goyas in the categories: “Best Producer”, “Best Mask” and “Best Special Effects”.
