Akutan is a city in the Aleutians East Borough in the US state of Alaska with 1027 inhabitants. It is located on Akutan Island , which is part of the Aleutian Islands.
geography
Akutan is located in a bay in the east of Akutan Island, which is part of the Aleutian archipelago in southwest Alaska. Not far from the village is Mount Akutan , a stratovolcano that is one of the most active volcanoes in the region.
history
Akutan was founded in 1878 when several families of the people of the Aleutian Islands settled in that place. In the same year the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Alexander Nevsky Chapel was built, as many Aleutians belong to the Orthodox denomination due to Alaska's Russian past . The current building was only built in 1918 and replaced the older building. The Western Fur and Trading Co. built a fur warehouse and trading post. In 1912, the Pacific Whaling Company built a whaling processing plant that operated until 1939.
population
According to the 2010 census, 239 people (23.3%) are white, 184 (17.9%) are African-American, 56 (5.5%) are Native Americans, of which 52 are Alaska Natives (5.1%) 445 (43.3 %) are Asians, 15 are Polynesians and 40 people (3.9%) are of another race. 214 people (20.8%) of any race are Hispanics or Latinos.
