Al-Muthanna ( Arabic المثنى, DMG al-Muṯannā ) is a governorate in southern Iraq on the border with Saudi Arabia . The governorate covers 51,740 km², and there are about 550,000 settled residents (2006), as well as another 15,000 Bedouins . The capital of the governorate is Samawa .
The border with Saudi Arabia is guarded by 680 border police officers and the newly established 2nd Infantry Brigade of the Iraqi army with 1,800 soldiers . The Multinational Forces in Iraq (MNF) invested around 340 million US dollars in rebuilding the governorate's infrastructure by July 2006.
