Al-Qaryatain , also Karjatain or al-Karjatain ( Arabic القريتين, DMG al-Qaryatayn ), is a city in Syria in the Homs Governorate . To the northeast of the city is Tadmur ( Palmyra ), Riqama and Dardaghan to the northwest, and Furqlus to the north. To the west are Mahin , Huwwarin and Sadad . To the southwest are Kara , Deir Atiyah and an-Nabk . In the south lies Jairud .

The name of the city means "two villages". In 2004 the city had 14,208 inhabitants. The Nahiya of Qaryatain had 16,795 inhabitants at the same time. Many of the residents are Syrian Christians , the rest mostly Sunnis .

On the night of August 6, 2015, the city was captured by the terrorist militia “Islamic State” . On August 7, 2015, a human rights organization announced that 230 people had been kidnapped. A video distributed by IS is said to show the destruction of the 4th century monastery Mar Elian at the city gates by the Islamists.

On April 3, 2016, troops of the Syrian government army recaptured the city from IS. The offensive by the government forces was supported by more than 40 air strikes by Russian and Syrian air forces on targets in and around al-Qaryatain. Approx. At the end of September / beginning of October 2017, IS succeeded in getting behind enemy lines and retaking al-Qaryatain. The re-conquest by the Syrian army took place on October 21, 2017. According to human rights activists, at least 116 people were murdered by Daesh during the three-week reign of terror, 83 of them shortly before the Islamists fled the city.
