Al-Qatrun ( Arabic القطرون, DMG al-Qaṭrūn ; Italian El Gatrun ) is an oasis in the municipality of Murzuq in southern Libya on the main route to Niger and Chad . The place has a gas station and a consulate of the Republic of Niger. When the border crossing to Niger in Tumu is closed, travelers coming from Niger report to al-Qatrun. The place has 4500 inhabitants (2013 estimate).
During the civil war , the city was briefly taken in July 2011 by troops of the opposition. On July 23, Gaddafi's troops retook the place and advanced further south to al-Wigh .
