Alain Bensoussan
Alain Bensoussan (born May 12, 1940 in Tunis ) is a French mathematician .
Life
Bensoussan studied at the École polytechnique , obtained a diploma from the École nationale de la statistique et de l'administration économique (ENSAE) and received his doctorate in 1969 from the University of Paris under Jacques-Louis Lions ( Filtering Theory for Systems Governed by Partial Differential Equations ). From 1971 to 1973 he was a professor at the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM), of which he was director from 1975 to 1977. He has been Professor at the University of Paris-Dauphine since 1972 , and Professor Emeritus since 2004 . From 1975 to 1977 he was head of the mathematics faculty there. He was also part-time Maître de conférences at the École polytechnique from 1970 to 1986 and part-time professor at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris from 1980 to 1985 . From 1984 to 1996 he was President of INRIA (Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique). He is a professor at the University of Texas at Dallas , where he heads the International Center for Decision and Risk Analysis (ICDRiA).
Bensoussan is primarily concerned with applied mathematics such as the stochastic control of distributed systems, financial mathematics and operations research . In particular, he also dealt with applications in space travel. From 1996 to 2003 he was President of the French space research center Center national d'études spatiales (CNES) and from 1999 to 2002 he was President of the ESA Council.
He is a member of the Académie des sciences (2003), the Academia Europaea , the International Academy of Astronautics and the Académie des technologies . In 1984 he received the Gay Lussac Humboldt Prize . In 2002 he received the Prix Spécial de l'Association aéronautique et astronautique de France and in 2001 the Distinguished Service Medal of NASA . He is an officer of the Legion of Honor (2003, knight since 1991), commander of the Ordre national du Mérite and holder of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, 1st class (2003). Since 1985 he has been a "Fellow" of the IEEE . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
