Alain Daniélou

Alain Daniélou (born October 4, 1907 in Neuilly-sur-Seine , Hauts-de-Seine , † January 27, 1994 in Lonay , Switzerland ) was a French Indologist , musicologist , author and university professor .

Life

Daniélou's father was the Breton politician Charles Daniélou and his mother Madeleine Clamorgan founded a Christian educational organization for teachers. One of his brothers was the Roman Catholic prelate Jean Daniélou .

Daniélou studied singing with Charles Panzéra as well as classical dance with Nicholas Legat and composition with Max d'Ollone .

His partner from 1931 was Raymond Burnier, Swiss photographer and later husband of Radha Burnier . He traveled with him to India in 1932 , where both were enthusiastic about the country's culture and art. Among other things, they visited the temples of Khajuraho and later gained international attention with their photos of the temple complexes. The first photo exhibition at New York's Metropolitan Museum featured images taken by Daniélou in Khajuraho.

In the following years Daniélou wrote several Indian books on the wisdom of the Veda , Indian philosophy and Shaivism . In 1949 Daniélou got a job as a professor at the Hindu Banaras Hindu University and became director of the College of Indian Music . In 1963 he founded the International Institute for Comparative Music Studies and Documentation in West Berlin and was its first director until 1975. In the 1960s, through this institute, he published the Unesco Collection: A Musical Anthology of the Orient ( German title: Music of the Orient ).

Daniélou wrote more than 30 books on Indian music and culture. He also worked as a painter and photographer. Daniélou studied Indian classical music in Varanasi with Shivendranath Basu and learned the traditional Indian plucked instrument vina . He wrote works for classical Indian music and translated several works by the Indian monk Swami Karpatri which it into the Shaivism introduced.

Daniélou was officer of the Légion d'Honneur , officer of the Ordre National du Mérite and Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres . In 1981 he received the UNESCO / CIM Prize for Music and in 1987 the Kathmandu Medal of UNESCO .
