Alain I. (Brittany)
Alain I the Great (Breton: Alan Veur , French: Alain le Grand ; † 907 ) was a prince of the Bretons in the late 9th and early 10th centuries.
He was the brother of Count Pascweten von Vannes , who was expelled from Vannes by the Normans in 876 . Alain took over the rule there and continued the feud against Count Judicaël of Rennes for supremacy over Brittany , which his brother had already fought with his father since the assassination of King Solomon in 874. From the year 888, however, Brittany faced the threat of a large army of the Seine-Normans , which had previously plundered the land around Paris and had been persuaded by Emperor Charles the Fat to withdraw by means of a contractual agreement. These Normans landed on the coast of the Cotentin and conquered Saint-Lô , from where raids into the Breton country took place. Judicaël fell in battle against them in battle, probably 888/889 at Questembert , which gave Alain sole power over the Bretons. In 890, the Bretons finally won the decisive victory against the Normans in a battle by forcing the enemy into a river, presumably the Blavet , and knocking them down .
With this victory, the threat from the Normans to Brittany subsided, which enabled Alain to establish a stable rule until his death in 907. He was followed by the Count of Cornouaille , Gourmaëlon , as the leader of the Bretons, whose internal order, however , fell apart due to renewed invasions by the Loire-Normans .
