Alamode Island (formerly: Terra Firma Island) is the southeasternmost and largest of the Terra Firma Islands off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located in Marguerite Bay off the west coast of Graham Land .

To the west of the island is Dumbbell Island , and off its southwestern coast is Pigmy Rock .

history

The island was discovered and explored by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill in 1936. It was first named Terra Firma Island after a group of the expedition, which was supposed to create depots, camped here after the sea ice broke up. However, this name was later given to the entire archipelago.

It received its current name from the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) after a re-examination of the island in 1948 due to its resemblance to a "Pie à la Mode", a fruit cake that is often served with an ice ball on it.

flora

Alamode Island is the southernmost place where the Antarctic Schmiele ( Deschampsia antarctica ) and the Antarctic Perlwort ( Colobanthus quitensis ), the only two seed plants of the Antarctic, occur.

geology

The island has steep rocky cliffs overlooked by a knoll of rock and snow that rises to a height of 320 meters.

On the island there is a relatively flat plain, several thousand square meters in size, the rock of which is made up of dark gray, rockite volcanic breccias . At this level, several pink find granite - boulders . During a period of heavier glaciation , the mainland ice cover extended to the Terra Firma Islands and beyond. Fragments of granite and other rocks were removed from the mainland and underwater rock formations and dragged along by the ice up to this level.
