Alan Brindle

Alan Brindle (born March 11, 1915 in Nelson , Lancashire , † April 5, 2001 in Burnley ) was a British entomologist . His research focus was the order of the earwigs (Dermaptera).

Live and act

After school Brindle worked for almost ten years in a textile mill in Lancashire . He also learned German, French and Russian in an evening school. During the Second World War he was with the secret service in Karachi and Chittagong , where he studied the Urdu language, among other things . In his spare time he collected insects and snake skins. After the war he taught biology before joining the Manchester Museum in 1958 . Here he was assistant curator until 1961. After the death of Walter Douglas Hincks (1906–1961), he became curator of the entomology department, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. In 1941 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society of London . At the University of Manchester he graduated with a thesis on the way of life of the caddis flies to the Master of Science. Brindle authored 208 scientific articles, inter alia, in the journals Transactions of the Society for British Entomology , Journal of Natural History , Proceedings of the Royal Entomological Society. Series B and Series B in the Journal of Entomology . He described 240 new species of insects and made a significant contribution to building the entomological collections of the Manchester Museum. He also played a leading role in the entomological and natural history societies in the north of England.
