Alan Raymond Mais, Baron Mais GBE ERD TD JP ( July 7, 1911 - November 28, 1993 ) was a British politician who became a member of the House of Lords in 1967 as a life peer under the Life Peerages Act 1958 and between 1972 and 1973 was the first peer elected Lord Mayor of London .

Life

During the Second World War made corn his military service in the Territorial Army of the British Army and was last to Major and temporary lieutenant colonel (Temporary Lieutenant Colonel) transported. For his military services he was awarded the Territorial Decoration (TD), the Emergency Reserve Decoration (ERD) and on February 1, 1945 as Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

On January 20, 1967, Mais, now a colonel, was appointed one of the lieutenants of London by Queen Elizabeth II . By a Letters Patent from 26 August 1967 corn was the temporarily as justices of the peace (justice of the peace) acted as a life peer with the title Baron corn , of Walbrook in the City of London , in the peerage collected and was thus up on his death as a member of the House of Lords. In 1972, he succeeded Sir Edward Howard as Lord Mayor of London , making him the first peer to be elected Lord Mayor of London. On December 4, 1972, City University London awarded him an honorary doctorate in science. After a year in office, Hugh Wontner succeeded him as Lord Mayor in 1973 , while on January 25, 1974, he was reappointed Lieutenant of London by Queen Elizabeth II.

In addition, he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire in 1973 and reappointed one of the Lieutenants of London on February 5, 1976. On November 16, 1981, the Queen again appointed him one of the Lieutenants of London. From 1984 he was a master (Master) of the Worshipful Company of Marketors, the livery company in London responsible for marketing professionals .
