The Alatyr ( Russian Ала́тырь , ersjanisch Ратор лей , Chuvash Улатӑр ) is a left tributary of the Sura in the European part of Russia .

It rises around 10 km west of Pervomaisk in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast in the northern Volga Heights . The 296 km long river with a catchment area of 11,200 km² initially flows in an easterly direction through the southern part of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, where it receives numerous small tributaries.

Between Ilyinskoye and Kemlja it flows into the territory of the Republic of Mordovia . The river gently meanders through the northeastern part of Mordovia in an easterly direction and crosses the border with the Chuvash Republic between Ardatow and the city of Alatyr .

The Alatyr flows into the Sura a few kilometers northeast of the city of the same name . The river is ice-free from April to November.
