The Albeli ( Coregonus zugensis ) is a species of fish from the genus Coregonus that is endemic to Lake Lucerne .

features

The Albeli usually reaches a standard length of 200 mm. However, specimens from 25 to 30 centimeters have also become known. The number of gill pots is 35 to 42. The color of the back is more or less pale olive.

Occurrence

Today the Albeli is only restricted to the area of Lake Lucerne. It died out in Lake Zug .

Way of life

Most individuals spawn from November to December, migrating along the bank slope to depths between 20 and 80 meters. The diet consists of zooplankton and insect nymphs.

Economical meaning

The Albeli is considered to be the economically most important food fish on Lake Lucerne. In the period from 1976 to 1982, the Albelis caught 58 percent of all edible fish caught in Lake Lucerne. The Albeli is also very popular with sport fishermen.

Systematics and nomenclature

The Albeli was first described by Otto Nüsslin in 1882 as the subspecies Coregonus macrophthalmus zugensis . In the same year the taxon received the species rank. In 1885 Victor Fatio changed the name to Coregonus crassirostris compactus and in 1890 to Coregonus exiguus albellus . In 1950 Paul Steinmann (1885–1953) revised Fatio's classification and gave the name Coregonus albellus for the Brienzlig from Lake Thun and Lake Brienz . According to Nüsslin's work, the Albeli got its species status back.

The Coregons of Lake Zurich are also known locally as Albeli. However, this is the Blaalig ( Coregonus zuerichensis ).
