Albert Edouard Marie Henri Janssen (born April 1, 1883 in Antwerp , Antwerp Province , Belgium , † March 29, 1966 in Merchtem , Flemish Brabant , Belgium) was a Belgian university professor and politician of the Catholic Party and the Christelijke People's Party (CVP) .

biography

After attending school, he studied law , politics and social science and graduated studies with the promotion to Doctor of Law from. After completing his studies, he initially worked as a lawyer .

In 1908 he was first secretary and then from 1919 to 1925 director of the National Bank of Belgium . In addition, he took up a teaching position as a professor at the Catholic University of Leuven in 1911 . In 1920 he also became a member of the Finance Commission of the League of Nations and was a member of it until 1940.

In June 1925 he was appointed to a government by Prime Minister Prosper Poullet as Minister of Finance for the first time and was a member of this government until May 1926.

He held the post of finance minister again between December 1938 and February 1939 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Paul-Henri Spaak . He then was interim president of the Caisse Générale d'Espargne et de Retraite from 1940 to 1945.

After the end of the Second World War , he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State for his political services on June 24, 1949 .

From January 1952 to April 1954 he was Finance Minister for the third time as a member of the government of Prime Minister Jean Van Houtte . He was then President of the Société Belge de Banque.

Most recently he was a co-opted member of the Senate as a representative of the CVP from 1956 to 1965 . Later the Belgian Post issued a special stamp in his honor .
