Albert Abele from and to Lilienberg
Baron Albert Ludwig Joseph Maria Abele von und zu Lilienberg (born March 1, 1857 in Ancona ; † October 17, 1927 in Rosenburg ) was an Austro-Hungarian Lieutenant Field Marshal and commander of the 2nd Cavalry Division during the First World War .
Origin and family
The roots of Abele's family go back to the 15th century, when Peter Aubeller from the Breisgau received the imperial nobility on August 5, 1495 and his descendant, the secret councilor and court chamber president Christoph Abele von Lilienberg, even the count status on November 14, 1684. Since with him the main line of the family had expired in 1685, his nephew, Johann Christoph Carl Abele von und zu Lilienberg, Imperial Chamber Councilor and trainee lawyer, was appointed to inheritance and on August 4, 1708 received the status of hereditary-Austrian baron. The future field marshal lieutenant was a descendant of the same in the 5th rank.
Albert, the son of the imperial and royal major general Franz (* September 21, 1818 - March 11, 1880) from his first marriage to Bertha Michel, married Friederike, known as Fritzi, on February 16, 1889, (* 1866 in Graz ; † April 13 1916 in Marburg an der Drau ), daughter of the former mayor of Graz Ferdinand Portugall (1837–1901).

On October 23, 1909 he advanced to Colonel and Commander of the kuk Bohemian Dragoon Regiment No. 13 and received on June 21, 1913 as Colonel Brigadier in command of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade. On May 7, 1914, he received approval to wear the commander of the royal Saxon Order of Albrecht, 2nd class .
In the first World War
With the outbreak of World War I, he was appointed major general on August 1, 1914. He took part with his cavalry brigade in the battle in the Carpathian Mountains , including the battle of Limanowa-Lapanow in December 1914.
From November 1915 to November 1918 he was in command of the 2nd Cavalry Troop Division. In this office he was promoted to field marshal lieutenant on August 12, 1917 and retired on January 1, 1919.
Although his combat missions are difficult to determine, confirm his awards, which he received on the one hand because of brave behavior towards the enemy ( Order of the Iron Crown 3rd Class with the war decoration (KD.) In January 1915, Imperial and Royal Military Merit Cross of Emperor Franz Joseph I (KD. ) on September 7, 1915, the Knight's Cross of the Austrian Leopold Order (KD.) on June 15, 1916 and the authorization to wear the Iron Cross 2nd Class from October 17, 1915), on the other hand because of the successful leadership of a cavalry division against the enemy (Order of the Iron Crown 2nd Class (KD.) On December 11, 1916 and kk Military Merit Cross of Emperor Franz Joseph I 2nd Class (KD.) With Swords on December 20, 1917) were awarded his special military virtues.
coat of arms
1708: Shield squared with a central shield, this one divided by silver and black: lily changed colors. 1 and 4 made of black and silver four by four. 2 and 3 divided by silver and red: crowned griffin changed. On the shield the crown of barons over it three crowned helmets, on the first the ceiling of Austria and a crowned black eagle covered with a silver bar, on the middle black and white ceiling and a silver lily, on the third the same cover and half crowned griffin covered in red with a silver bar.
The family of Feldzeugmeister Vincenz von Abele is not related to that of Albert Abele von und zu Lilienberg, nor is any other Abele family that received the Württemberg nobility in 1819. This can already be verified by the different coats of arms.
