Albert "Albie" Axelrod (born February 12, 1921 in New York City , † February 24, 2004 there ) was an American foil fencer .
Life
Albert Axelrod took part in five Olympic Games from 1952 to 1968 . His best result with the team was a fourth place in 1956 in Melbourne . After moving into the final round, the US team was defeated by the teams from France , Italy and Hungary and thus finished last in the group. At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 he also reached the final round in singles, which he completed with 3-2 victories behind the Soviet fencers Viktor Schdanowitsch and Yuri Sissikin on the bronze medal. Axelrod achieved repeated successes at the Pan American Games . In 1955 in Mexico City , 1959 in Chicago , 1963 in São Paulo and 1967 in Winnipeg he always won at least the silver medal both individually and with the team. In 1959 and 1963 he managed to win the gold medal with the team.
Axelrod was also able to win several gold medals at the Maccabiade . In 1973 he was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame .
