Albert Belmont

Albert Belmont (born October 26, 1875 in Cham ; † September 26, 1969 in Basel , reformed , then non-denominational , entitled to reside in Schwyz ) was a Swiss politician ( SP / KPS ) and trade unionist .

biography

Albert Belmont was born on October 26, 1875 in Cham as the son of the carpenter Josef Albert Nazar Belmont and Franziska Josepha Theresia née Peter. Belmont began studying law at the Universities of Friborg , Geneva and Zurich , which he completed in 1908 with the academic degree of Dr. iur. completed. Immediately afterwards he worked as a lawyer in Zug from 1908 to 1916 , then in Basel, of which until 1934 as an associate of Franz Welti.

Albert Belmont was married to Maria Ida, born Eisenring, who was born in Jonschwil . He died on September 26, 1969, a month before he would have turned 94 in Basel.

Political career

Albert Belmont was a leading Grütlian in Zug at the beginning of his political career from 1910 to 1916 in the municipal council ( legislature ) and cantonal council. After 1920 he finally switched from the Social Democratic Party to the Communist Party.

In Basel he sat in the Grand Council from 1917 until the Communist Party was banned in 1940. In addition, he sat on the National Council for the canton from 1919 to 1925 . To this end , he presided over the Communist Party of the city of Basel from 1921. In 1919 he was elected president of the Basel tram union.
