Albert Bielschowsky (born January 3, 1847 in Namslau , Silesia, † October 21, 1902 in Berlin ) was a German literary scholar . He became known through his writings on Goethe .

Life

Bielschowsky was born in Namslau (Namysłów) in Silesia . He studied philology at the University of Breslau and the University of Berlin. In 1869 he received his doctorate in Breslau. From 1870 to 1886 he worked in higher education in Brieg and then moved to Berlin. There he devoted himself to literary research.

His book on Goethe was well received by literary scholars. Bielschowsky, however, believed he recognized traits of Goethe or people close to him in the poet's stage characters, such as Charlotte von Stein in Iphigenie or Duchess Anna Amalia in Leonore Sanvitale , without being able to give sufficient reasons.

Albert Bielschowsky died in Berlin in 1902 at the age of 55. He was buried in the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Cemetery in Westend . The grave has not been preserved.

Bielschowsky's work on Goethe remained unfinished, so Theobald Ziegler completed it.
