Albert Bryan Jr. (born February 21, 1968 in Saint Thomas , US Virgin Islands ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He has been the governor of the US Virgin Islands since 2019.

Early years and education

Albert Bryan Jr. was born the eldest of five sons of Albert Bryan Sr. and his wife Genevieve Bryan in the US Virgin Islands, where he grew up in the city of Charlotte Amalie . In their teens, the family moved to Saint Croix , where his father found better employment. In 1985 he graduated from St. Dunstan's Episcopal High School and then began studying economics at Wittenberg University in Springfield , Ohio. He graduated in 1989 with a bachelor's degree and then with a Master of Arts degree in business administration at the University of the Virgin Islands in 2003.

Professional background

After graduating, he initially worked in various positions in companies in various industries. In 2007, Bryan was appointed by then Governor John de Jongh as Minister of Labor in his cabinet and was also head of the economic development agency. During the eight-year tenure of de Jongh he made a significant contribution to improving the situation on the labor market and the economic development of the archipelago. An initiative goes back to him, which aims to make it easier for young people from difficult backgrounds to access training and further education positions, and also the Small Contractors Bonding Program, which aims to simplify the granting of loans for the establishment of smaller companies. In addition, his remodeling measures helped his ministry save considerable costs. As early as 2002, he co-founded the non-profit organization Generation Now , which aims to bring the public closer to the interrelationships between business and politics, but also offers seminars for the advanced training of executives.

In 2016, Bryan announced that he would run for governor of the US Virgin Islands. Together with his runner-up candidate Tregenza Roach , he put the focus of the election campaign on building modern infrastructure, health care, combating poverty and violence and investing in education. In the Democratic primaries in August 2018, he beat his competitors Allison "Allie" Petrus and Angel E. Dawson Jr. with 39.23%. In the subsequent gubernatorial elections on November 20, 2018, he won against incumbent Kenneth Mapp with 55.04% of the vote - 11,796 to 9,766. He was sworn in as governor on January 7, 2019.

Personal

Bryan has been married to Yolanda Cabodevilla Bryan since 1998. Together they are parents to two daughters, Aliyah and Sumayah.
