Juan Francisco Luis

Juan Francisco Luis (born July 10, 1940 in Vieques , Puerto Rico , †  June 4, 2011 in Saint Croix (US Virgin Islands) ) was an American politician . Between 1978 and 1987 he was Governor of the US Virgin Islands.

Career

Juan Francisco Luis came to Saint Croix on the Virgin Islands with his parents as a toddler at the age of two months. He attended Christiansted High School there . He then studied at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico . He then returned to Saint Croix, where he worked as a teacher for some time. He also worked for the Territorial Department of Housing and Urban Development . He then served as a sergeant in the US Army . After his military service, he held a number of offices in the territorial government. In the meantime he also worked in the private sector, including as a manager and accountant .

In 1972, Luis was elected to the Virgin Islands Senate as a member of the Independent Citizens Movement . Since 1974 he was Deputy Governor of Governor Cyril E. King as Lieutenant Governor . After his death he took over his office as governor in accordance with the constitution, which he exercised after two re-elections between January 2, 1978 and January 5, 1987. Direct re-election in 1986 was prohibited by the constitution. In 1990 he applied unsuccessfully to return to his previous position. He died on June 4, 2011 in a hospital on Saint Croix. Juan Luis had been married to Luz Maria Guadalupe since 1968, with whom he had two children.
