Joseph Wallace Oman

Joseph Wallace Oman (born August 15, 1864 in Lightstreet , Columbia County , Pennsylvania , †  July 1, 1941 in London , England ) was an American naval officer. Between 1919 and 1921 he was the military governor of the US Virgin Islands .

Career

Joseph Oman attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis ( Maryland ) until 1886 and then served in the US Navy between 1886 and 1921 , where he was promoted to Rear Admiral . He participated in the Spanish-American War of 1898 , the Philippine-American War and the First World War in part. During this war he transported around 120,000 American soldiers to the front in France in a German booty ship until the end of the war . For this he received the Navy Cross and his promotion to Rear Admiral.

Between 1919 and 1921, Joseph Oman succeeded James Harrison Oliver as Military Governor of the US Virgin Islands. During this time this area flourished economically, which was largely due to the export of rum . After the end of his time as governor, Oman withdrew from military service. He spent an evening in London, where he died on July 1, 1941.
