Alexander A. Farrelly

Alexander Anthony Farrelly (born December 29, 1923 in Frederiksted , US Virgin Islands , †  September 10, 2002 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1987 and 1995 he was Governor of the US Virgin Islands.

Career

During World War II , Alexander Farrelly served in the US Army until 1946 . He then studied history at St. John's University in New York City . After a subsequent law degree at the same university and at Yale University and his admission to the bar, he began to work in this profession. In 1959 he worked as a lawyer specializing in Caribbean affairs for the UN . In 1962, he became assistant federal attorney for the US Virgin Islands; in 1965 he worked there as a judge. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In 1966 he was elected to the parliament of his homeland.

In the 1986 elections, Farrelly was elected to succeed Juan Francisco Luis as the new governor of the outer area. After being re-elected, he was able to exercise this office between January 5, 1987 and January 5, 1995. He attached importance to good working conditions and promoted social reforms. He also improved the infrastructure of the Virgin Islands. He also became known for hiring many women in public service. In 1989 he had to deal with Hurricane Hugo and its consequences.

After the end of his time as governor, Alexander Farrelly no longer appeared politically. He died after a long illness on September 10, 2002 in Arlington.
